Bicycling on South Columbia St. is a paper I wrote in 2005 describing the danger of a proposed bike lane on this 5.7% high speed descent.

Now in 2013 the bike lanes are in the process of becoming reality; allegedly 4′ wide on the ascent and 5′ on the descent.

In 2009 the R4-11 Bicyclists May Use Full Lane sign and Shared Lane Markings were added to the MUTCD. Given that a bike lane will be placed on the descent, and bike lanes are preferential use lanes, the adjacent travel lane should have centered Shared Lane Markings, and R4-11 signs should be placed. These interventions would support those bicycle drivers who elect to not operate in the dangerous bike lane.
